Floods in Punjab making life difficult

Punjab is facing one of its worst floods after 1988. 14 people have already died because of the floods. More than 200 villages have been effected due to these floods and are under 5 to 12 feet water following breaches along the embankments of the Sutlej river.

Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Moga, Bhatinda,Sangroor and Ropar have been the worst-affected where more than 200 villages have been evacuated so far. Army has been called to rescue people in the effected areas. The Army has rescued hundred of families but many are still stranded.

Thousands of acres of fertile land with sown paddy crop has also been inundated in these districts by the flood waters. Livestock was also washed away in the flooding.

Hundreds of villagers in the affected districts were still waiting for help while being perched on rooftops of submerged houses and on train tracks.

Besides the help of Army and Police, the cooperation of NGOs and religious organisations have been sought to deal with the situation.
